Most of my work is in journalism, which might be the reason why I thought of this first. I do have to disagree somewhat because I've read a lot of legal docs and I do see some pretty "plain" language used in some of them (but I know you said "tend to").
In any case, my main concern was with althergebracht and verbraucht. I think worn-out or stale is good enough for "verbraucht." Now, I know the question is about the first word, not the second.
I think this is one of those times where KudoZ rules aren't helping much; you should find something that works well in combination, e.g., I can find you several U.S. cases using "old and thus stale" (in reference to information).
