I have two examples of this word in context: (1) "Die vorstehenden beiden Aufgebote, sowohl des Candidaten Bernhard Heinrich Sieckman...als auch des Junggesellen Johann Philipp Hinnenthal...sind vom unterschriebenen Prediger...verrichtet." (2) "Damals lebten im Haus Nr. 53 am Kaulberg: Andreas Schulz, seine Frau, seine Söhne Georg und Carl Friedrich, seine Tochter Catharina Barbara, zwei Gesellen und zwei Lehrjungen, eine Magd vom Land und zwei Candidaten, an die offenbar Zimmer vermietet waren." Any suggestions what this title and/or occupation could be? They obviously weren't candidates for any particular office or position...
