German term or phrase: Kaschemme
From a role playing game manual narrative:
"Draußen stürmt es, wir sitzen sowieso die ganze Nacht in dieser Kaschemme fest. Also ihr bezahlt die ersten Runden und ich erzähle euch meine Geschichte."

Leo offers 'gin palace' but I am not too sure whether this is ok to use in this context ...

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

agree  franglish: Cassell's also gives pot-house

agree  Colin Rowe: I like "dive"
1 hr
  -> thank you !

agree  Kim Metzger: Dictionaries don't always reflect current English usage. A dive is already low. "Low dive" is a redundancy.
1 hr
  -> thank you !

agree  Birgit Gläser: I'd go with the dive or combine the pub with something more derogative than low like "lousy" "bloody" "rotten" - you want to give some colour to the dialogue...
5 hrs
  -> thank you !

neutral  John Fenz: RE: hedge-tavern - maybe if your striving for UK English, it ain't American :-). "Dive" , on the other hand, sounds good by itself in U.S. English

agree  Inge Meinzer: I like dive, also.
10 hrs
  -> danke, Inge !

disagree  Lancashireman: 'Hedge tavern' is a new one on me. I am not aware of any distinction between 'high' and 'low' pubs either. Hearty greets to both you and John Fenz from the UK.

joint

Explanation:
In the context of a video game I would use a word that's more commonly used (even though Ellen's translation is correct).

Example sentence(s):
  • "The service at Trader Vics is five star, the Polynesian décor takes you a world away from the grime and grind of Shanghai...when patronizing the joint that invented the Mai Tai it is depressing to drink a Mai Tai that is merely a shadow of what it could

tavern

Explanation:
Looks to me like "tavern" is most commonly used in video games, particularly as you seem to be dealing with a pirate game.
