German term or phrase: weiterbrächte
It may just be that I need some more coffee in the morning, but I fail to see the precise meaning of "weiterbrachte" in this sentence:

"Ein Schwadronieren über einen griechischen Euro-Austritt ist kontraproduktiv. Selbst wenn es Griechenland weiterbrächte, würde schon die glaubwürdige Ankündigung eines Austritts die komplette Eurozone sprengen."

The usual meaning of the word somehow seems to be the opposite of what the context suggests. I'd greatly appreciate your help. Thanks a lot.

even if Greece would succeed,...

Explanation:
weiterbrächte comes from the verb weiterbringen - in imperfect subjunctive (syn: vorwärtsbringen, voranbringen, fördern)

another option:
even if Greece would be well positioned...

Example sentence(s):
  • Diese Lösung bringt uns (nicht) weiter.
  • Wenn wir diesen Plan verfolgen würden, brächte er uns (nicht) weiter.

neutral  Michael Martin, MA: Choice of verb can be debated but I would change to “even if Greece were to succeed (succeeded)”. Many people don’t care about subjunctives in the spoken language but we’re held to higher standards in the written form.

stands to gain from it

Explanation:
Often heard in this or other contexts.

"The ongoing speculation about a Greek exit from the Euro zone is counterproductive. Even if Greece stands to gain from it, the mere announcement of such a move, if credible, would break the Euro zone."

BTW, the intended logical reference of "it' might be to "exit" rather than "speculation" even though grammatically the German seems to indicate otherwise.

I've found an even better solution which keeps close to the original expression - to move (Greece) forward

"The ongoing speculation about a Greek exit from the Euro zone is counterproductive. Even if it moved Greece forward, the mere announcement of such a move, if credible, would break the Euro zone."

Other examples from similar contexts:

"He said Reagan and Johnson were effective because they worked with whomever they needed to if it moved the country forward."

"That’s why I’ve asked to sit down soon with leaders of both parties so that we can have an extended discussion about what we can do together to move this country forward."
