Tech/Engineering - Computers (general)
German term or phrase: Einschalten
Hello,

This is not a question about the translation per se (I've been using "switch on" in the translation), but about writing this in the correct way in English.

At a number of points, the text talks about something happening in response to the Einschalten.

"Das wird durch das Einschalten ausgelöst".

The problem is that English usually requires SOMETHING to be switched on. "That is triggered by the *switching-on*" does not sound right. "That is triggered by the *switching*" is not precise, because they mean "switching on" (not off and not switching in general).

Is there a good way to say this in English?

neutral  Andrew Rink: imho "booting up" isn't quite the right expression here. "Hochfahren" would be "boot up", referring to the entire process of loading the OS into RAM, etc.

Einschalten (here)
Switching on the unit/system/device ... , ...

Explanation:
Do you know what the item is? If so, then try writing something like this:
"Switching on the (unit) will start the process."

It would really help to have some context as to what it is that is being switched on.

I always try to avoid using gerunds such as "the switching-on".

Example sentence(s):
  • Switching on the unit will start the process.
  • When switched on, the system boots up.
