Since they don’t ‘illustrate’ as such but merely ‘decorate’ or point towards the theme

According to Mayer, a decorative graphic is "intended to interest or entertain the reader but does not enhance the message of the passage." An example of this would be a picture of waves crashing on rocks for a lesson in marine biology.

If you think the pictures are 'explanatory' despite the text stating that they are 'Schmuck', you should perhaps confer with the client before committing yourself on this term.

And still the agrees roll in for 'illustrations' even though one of these specifically comments in the AtA box on the contradiction between 'explanatory' and 'Schmuck' and another refers to 'bad German'! The outcome of this question is looking predictable but take care when completing the glossary entry...

Thanks for the extra context. There does not seem to be anything there to suggest that the Schmuckbilder have an explanatory or illustrative role. If you are concerned about the derogatory connotations of 'decorative', omit this and use 'graphics'.

agree  Klaus Herrmann: I think you're right on spot here. Schmuckbild is for decoration, Schaubild for explanation. I'm unable to come up with a glossary, but hits from googling for both terms together support this understanding.
