Please mind the right prepositions: "im Umgang mit" + 1 noun (and not two), but "Übergang von ... zu ..." (i.e. two nouns). So obviously two expressions got mixed up here. As in English, you deal *with* something, but the transition is from a starting point to an end point. So here's what might be the intended meaning:
- Übergang von der Schule zum Beruf (or perhaps von Schule zu Beruf)
- Umgang mit Schule UND Beruf
- or even: Umgang mit dem Übergang von der Schule zum Beruf (i.e. dealing with the transition from school to professional life)

has been extremely helpful and I really appreciate all the effort. I will have difficulty deciding, but believe David H. came first with the suggestion to be creative. I don't think the person who gave the title to the seminar is aware of the agony it caused and the candidate enrolled probably has more on her mind than worrying about the meaning or potential error involved.

This does not make sense at all. "Umgang" has a completely different meaning than "Übergang". I would definitely inform the client about this.

I don't believe it's an unusual use of Umgang. "Umgang von der Schule in den Beruf"gets no hits. "Übergang von der Schule in den Beruf"gets 104,000.

and this is the title of the seminar the person attended. I believe I have come upon an unusual use of Umgang and David's solution of Leaving school...is a legitimate interpretation and saves me having to provide a footnote or otherwise question the meaning. The prepositions von...in would otherwise be an awkward construction.

This has to do with personnel and there's certainly something missing here. Im Umgang mit = handling/dealing with/guiding. Are you sure there is no other context?
