neutral  EK Yokohama: I don't think this works here in this context.

-> Since "ueberliefern" can mean "pass down", and this is in one family, "descendant" might work here.

agree  TonyTK: Assuming the first (anecdotally reported) cases might have occurred before the 1850s, I think "reported" can be interpreted as being more informal than "recorded" and therefore works better in this context.

Explanation:
That's the only way I've seen/heard this rendered in English.. Compare with link below:

"In his introduction, Leigh says the only way he call tell his story is "in terms of the people I've heard playing jazz, whether alive or on record, and those with whom I've tried to play it."

We're fortunate in that the English language provides us with many options to handle this.. (For the record, the expression "on record" also covers accounts that have been handed down orally).

on record:
"Marzolo researched a family in Padua from which a total of 46 persons, living or on record, have experienced multiple incidents of postaxial polydactyly associated with syndactyly over four generations."

on record as
"Marzolo researched a family in Padua from which a total of 46 persons, living or deceased, are on record as having experienced multiple incidents of postaxial polydactyly associated with syndactyly over four generations."

reported
"Marzolo researched a family in Padua from which a total of 46 persons, living or reported, have experienced multiple incidents of postaxial polydactyly associated with syndactyly over four generations."

said / reported to

6 mins
-> Granted, I could have picked a less ambiguous example but this particular meaning of “on record” is established enough so as not to require any supporting evidence...

Marzolo studied a family in Padua with a total of 46 actual or reputed cases of (medical jargon, your division) had been recorded over four generations.

neutral  TonyTK: Not happy with "cases" (see Discussion Box) and what about "lebenden"? (And shouldn't it be "have", not "had"?)
1 hr
-> My mistake, it should be 'where a total of..." as for cases, well, that's what they were. Actual covers 'lebenden', but you could say 'current'.
