The definition in "menuiserie" seems good from Dominique's reference. Reading further down the reference the etymology section appears to suggest that the origins of all three words are similar, and I shall certainly keep a note of the web site for future ref.

Since 'alèze' seems to mean a 'planche ajoutée à un panneau pour l’élargir' as per Pascale's ref., I'd surmise it probably comes from the use of 'laize' to mean 'a width' of something + à — i.e. a piece that is added on to the width.

I appreciate your reasons for changing the KudoZ language but it makes it more difficult for me to see the answers. I have seen this written in all the variations including the one I cite. Can anyone offer the roots of the words - ie Latin or Greek or ?. I'm only doing the proof reading because for the past 10 years I've worked for a company doing renovations of kitchen for "particuliers" and sub contracting the finishing for kitchen suppliers.
