Non potrebbe invece trattarsi del nome della nave? Si tratta di una nave utilizzata nel medioevo, quindi ora non so se possa applicarsi al tipo di testo che stai traducendo, ma è effettivamente una barca a vela, ed è effettivamente a forma di U, quindi te la butto lì...

Asker: No, in questo caso non può essere la galea. Si tratta di una "zona" all'interno di una barca a vela da diporto, non della barca stessa. La U si riferisce alla disposizione degli arredi interni. Ho finito per tradurre "cambusa" come proposto da enrico paoletti
