L'abbreviazione sta per "gigaéchantillon par seconde", multiplo di "échantillon par seconde" = "campione al secondo", cioè l'unità di misura della frequenza di campionamento, equivalente a 1 Hertz, come si ritrova, ad esempio negli oscilloscopi:


«la fréquence d'échantillonnage en Mé/s (mégaéchantillons par seconde) ou Gé/s (gigaéchantillons par seconde).»
