French term or phrase: couillard
Parola usata da Cézanne stesso per definire il suo stile iniziale.

«Couillard», c’est par cet adjectif fleuri que Cézanne décrit le style de ses peintures du milieu des années 1860, pour lesquelles il utilise la technique du couteau à palette. Empruntée au père du réalisme, Gustave Courbet, cette «manière» consiste à appliquer la couleur sur la toile par de larges touches brutes, non plus à l’aide d’un pinceau, mais d’un couteau. En fracturant ainsi la surface plane de la toile, le peintre insiste sur les volumes et rend le modelé du sujet avec force.
Les différents portraits de son oncle Dominique, que Cézanne réalise de l’été 1866 à l’hiver 1867, déclinent sur plus d’un an ses différentes expérimentations autour du style «couillard», pour ne pas dire viril.

Explanation:
Da ciò che ho letto il nome deriva dal fatto che utilizzava direttamente la spatola per stendere il colore sulla tela al posto del pennello, quindi vista l'origine "popolare" dell'espressione, che lui stesso si è attribuito, la intenderei in questo modo perché rimanda anche alla "forza bruta" utilizzata nello stendere il colore sulla tela.
