Dismount with a violent push, rearing up on hind legs Explanation: I live in the Scottish Highlands and there is no exact term for this. The stag mounts the deer - he jumps up and mates for a few seconds, then pushes back to disengage or dismount and, in so doing, rears up on his hind legs. Then he falls back down to earth. The Yoga posture "la chandelle" is a shoulderstand. Perhaps the author is alluding to the stag looking like he is doing a shoulderstand. But this seems unlikely, since he is on his hind legs! I think this is probably an idiomatic French expression (as I have seen it on other websites) for which there is no exact English equivalent. I would explain that the stag dismounts with a violent push and rears up on his hind legs. Sorry I couldn't be more specific. |

plays gooseberry Explanation: Looking at the reference below, and aligning the interpretations with your source text, then this suggestion may fit, if you are interested in keeping the phrase in the translated text. If not, then the other suggestions here will work better in my view. (Pedantic note : in rugby the phrase is 'up and under' rather than over..) » (http://www.dinosoria.com/cerf.htm) |
