Asker: No! Definitely nothing of this sort. As MCHD says, where is the link with a closure / clasp etc.? It's clear that this is a type of fastening and that its shape / mechanism etc. is somehow like a "coquille", rather than the translation having anything to do with literal molluscs etc.!

Asker: Thanks, if I hadn't found a direct match I would have gone with something like "hinged closure" as that suggests the clam shape but if there is an actual term "clamshell closure" that may well fit. Off to Google and see if it fits my context...
