"The game of golf is hugely enjoyable and immensely rewarding both to learn and to play. But membership of Newtonmore Golf Club is not exclusively about golf. Our club is a major social hub for Newtonmore, Speyside, the Upper Spey Valley, and much of Badenoch & Strathspey."

As Daryo stated, there was another qualifier, so I ended up with social and economic hubs. Thanks to all, have a lovely weekend.

neutral  AllegroTrans: somehow sounds unnatural, reminds me of places where prople have to gather in the event of fire
7 hrs
-> I was aware of the unfortunate association with "gathering areas" in case of emergency evacuation; from what I could find it's still also used to mean simply "places for meeting/congregating". Not a perfect option, agree on that.

neutral  Sheila Wilson: meeting areas or areas of interaction, but I agree with AT about gathering
8 hrs
->  Probably too unusual, but "areas of interaction" sounds fine, especially given the bit ".... qu’économique" that everyone seems to be forgetting (myself included) - it's got to agree with that also.

hub of community

Explanation:
"Pôle" can be translated as "cluster," "center" or even "hub." See:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluster_(économie)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_cluster

I think "hub" is nice here, because it evokes the image of a central point where things connect - like a "rassemblement."

And, there are examples of "hub of community" being used to describe a place where people come together for various activities including but definitely not limited to commercial exchange:

From http://hubsofcommunity.net/ :
"The other day I visited an area restaurant. And what I saw was community. An area business bringing people together. And as I left I gave serious thought to what I had been mulling for weeks, months, even years. What I began to see were 'hubs of community.'"

From http://www.communitycalendars.org/ :
"The aim of the project was to further the role of Public libraries as hubs of community resources and information. By managing their own community events calendars, public libraries are finding new and innovative ways to support the arts, culture, and heritage sectors."

From http://www.thanksgiving.org/aboutus/history.html :
"In 1964, four Dallas businessmen started to fill a void in the city. They thought back to the great centers of the Ancient World with its squares, hubs of community, gathering around places devoted to spirit and worship, and to all that takes humans beyond themselves."

Finally, the phrase has been used when describing golf clubs, See:

From http://www.kincardinegolfclub.com/ :
"Kincardine Golf Club has a very active membership and is a hub of community activity."

From http://www.nationalclub.org/advocacy/national_golf_day_2011/ :
"Golf clubs provide a vital community service in offering a place to recreate and socialize, serving as a hub of community social interaction."

-> Thanks. Perhaps it would seem a bit less clumsy to you as an adjective: "hubs of community activity" or "hubs of community social interaction," as in the examples above that describe golf clubs.
