I understand where you are coming from. But I don't see how saying a piece of furniture is "Basque style" means that it is "stylish". Nevertheless, if this is the way furniture experts talk...

Well, in the 11 years I worked in the field of furniture renovation this was always the phrase used to describe something that didn't fit into any other category, but needed some sort of "cachet" if you like. Lots of regional furniture is unusual but described with the regional name e.g. meubles style Basque. It also a polite way of avoiding saying it's ugly!!

I appreciate your comment that "mobilier de caractère" could be either unusual, stylish, full of character, etc, but then wouldn't it be specified as to what "style", what "character" or how it is "unusual". "stylish" has certain connotations in the context of home furnishings etc.

Honestly difficult to translate this in fact, it's one of those phrases which one understands, but is doesn't convert to EN easily. Mobilier de style = period furniture such as Louis Philippe, Empire etc. , mobilier régional = in the style of the region, ( a somewhat unwieldy phrase in EN) mobilier de caractère = could be either unusual, stylish, full of character, exotic. In this context I think Pascale's choice is probably best.

has an article on a shop featuring "mobilier de caractère", and it's not what I'd call "period"; it's more exotic/ethnic in this particular case, but shows that the term is used to mean furniture that has something special about it - and I think Pascale's "stylish" covers that well.

Pascale is right to say that mobilier de style is period furniture. Do you have any further context about the location of the (I presume) hotel or whether it's in a particular part of the country?
