'Segré est située au confluent de deux rivières au nord de la vallée de la Loire.' - Try as I may I just can't find a way of making this sound natural in English.

Thanks - I had thought of this but it seemed too 'geographical' at the time and not very poetical! The other synonyms seemed clumsy to me. Now reading it written by you it seems perfect!

I personally think that's the most natural choice for a tourism context, although "at the convergence of two rivers" would also be possible. A lot depends on the style of the text.

Explanation:
I totally agree that 'confluence' is perfectly acceptable in EN in this register: however, if you REALLY want to get right away from it, then I would suggest also getting away from a noun expression, and using one with active verbs, as suggested above.

I believe that of all the options, this is the most natural sounding in EN.

Pour la petite histoire, the mill where I used to live was adjacent to a spot known as 'Confolens', which is 'confluence' in the local dialect here. It was always nice to know that my little stream contributed to forming quite a big river. Tiny acorns and all that...
