French term or phrase: Comité national des associations du réseau d’accueil
Dans ce secteur, important dans notre enquête, il faut signaler quelques réseaux associatifs spécifiques comme le réseau CLARA (Comité national des associations du réseau d’accueil) qui regroupe des associations chargées par les pouvoirs publics, en 1973, de l’accueil, de l’information et de l’orientation des travailleurs immigrés et de leurs familles

English translation:Do not translate!
Explanation:
I would be very tempted here not to translate it, as you will in any case have to leave the French original: "for example, the CLARA network (Comité national des associations du réseau d’accueil)..."

There's almost no point translating it as the work and nature of CLARA is defined in detail right away in the bit you will translate! :-)

To see what Paula and I mean, do a translation of it with the acronym, the French phrase (which I think you have to leave in), the translation of the French phrase, and then the description that follows - and you\'ll see there\'s an awful lot of duplication.

agree  Mihailolja: Yes, "Reception" being the word here and not" Welcoming" as I thought.

-> Thanks once again Vicky. I know only too little of your wonderful language! On my list of things to learn ...

disagree  Allan Jeffs: Sorry Brian, but I just can't come to grips with your translation. It's too convoluted. Can't see a way of streamlining it but it can be explained.

-> I know, Allan, but it's convoluted in the original. How could it be streamlined?

disagree  Dr Andrew Read: See comments below - also I would certainly avoid capitalising any translation in this kind of instance unless there is an accepted English translation. (Check their website)

Explanation:
You can translate CLARA as the following description details exactly how CLARA helps immigrants - three-fold: accueil, information et orientation.
The French definition will mean nothing to mono-linguists.

neutral  Dr Andrew Read: At the most I'd summarise it as "a national umbrella group that" and then simply translate the description of its activities. It doesn't matter if the reader doesn't understand the French as the role of the org is then explained in detail anyway. :-)

agree  PRen (X): Absolutely - do not translate (after verifying, of course, whether the group has given itself an official English name), and as Andrew points out, the text explains it for the reader.

agree  Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X): Right..footnote, use French with bracket first time, footnote with asterisk and then use CLARA
