That does change things. I'm ashamed to say I didn't realise "face à face" was the standard term for a one-on-one; I haven't watched much football in France. In that case, you must be right; they would hardly have used the expression otherwise.

While "face à face avec le gardien" is of course literally true of an ordinary penalty, the expression is used to mean one-on-ones (= movement = dynamiques). See the England-Sweden match for an example: Raheem Sterling had a one-on-one with the goalie but failed to score. ;-)

Yes, you're quite right, "one-on-one" is an expression used for a situation during the match in which an attacker has got behind the defence and has only the goalkeeper to beat: a kind of duel. But since the word "shootout" normally always implies penalties, I didn't grasp the fact that you had that in mind. I see now what you meant. Sorry!

On balance, I still think it's probably just a pre-match penalty shootout and "dynamiques" doesn't really mean much. A "one-on-one shootout" of the kind you're envisaging would certainly be a novelty; I can't quite imagine it happening in a competition at this level. But who knows?

As Philippa says, not goal kick!

The whole question is what they mean by "dynamiques". It might mean that it's not a straightforward penalty: that the player taking the kick can take the ball towards the goalkeeper and the goalkeeper can move out to block the shot, which I think is what Philippa's suggesting, though to me "face à face avec le gardien" doesn't necessarily imply that, since it's literally true of an ordinary penalty. Or perhaps it might mean that taking the penalties before the kick-off makes them "dynamiques" in terms of their function. But I don't think we can tell one way or the other. I suppose you could always put "dynamic (pre-match) shootout" and leave it to the reader to decide.

Hi Charles, I don't agree with you about penalty shoot-outs being the same as one-on-ones (even though penalties are literally one person against one person): as I've already explained, in penalty shoot-outs the goalie can't move before the ball is touched by the penalty-taker. In one-on-ones (usually referred to as an action in the middle of a match), a player gets through the defenders with the ball and is one-on-one with the goalie, who is allowed to move around however much s/he wants... and for me that's clearly what they're doing here, possibly as Claude-Andrew says to avoid stress. I'm drawing on my (literally) thousands of hours of pitch-side experience as a football mum in France here! :-)

Thinking about it, I reckon it's like a shoot-out conducted before the matches "in case of a draw" so that the kids don't have to go through the stress of a shoot-out at the end of the tournament. I'll simply say "goal kick" and notify the client/ask for their approval.

"Séance de tirs au but" is the standard French term for the penalty shootout that decides matches drawn after extra time, as we are currently seeing in the World Cup:

A penalty shootout is by definition one-on-one: penalty taker versus goalkeeper.

A bit strange to do it before the match rather than at the end, but no reason to think the format is different (except that it's 3 rather than the usual 5)

"Nul bonifié" is a decider in the event of a draw, like extra credit for away goals. The idea seems to be that the result of the pre-match penalty shootout is the deciding factor if the match is drawn. So its function is exactly the same as the conventional shootout but done beforehand rather than at the end. As far as I can see that's all that "dynamique" means, unless I'm missing something.

The North American Soccer league used to have a tiebreaking system that they called a shootout. Five designated shooters would start (one at a time) with the ball at the center of the field and proceed towards the net, with the object of scoring a goal; they could do all the feints and moves they wanted in the process. The goalie did not have to stay on the goal line; he could move all he wanted to cut the shooter's angle. In the event of a tied match, the team that scored the most goals in the shootout phase was awarder the match and the points that went with it. It sounds to me as if your "tirs au but dynamiques" refet to something of this sort.

The context changes it slightly: the shoot-outs aren't for entertainment but for deciding draws. So a bit like having a penalty shoot-out before the match. Since your second bit of text mentions the "face à face" with the goalie, that backs up the idea that they're not actually shoot-outs, as when a player is one-on-one with a goalie the goalie can move as much as s/he wants...actually I'm now thinking the "dynamiques" is referring to that: the player runs up to shoot and the goalie moves around in the net or comes off the line etc. So I'm going to suggest "one-on-one shoot-outs" to give the idea of the difference from a normal shoot-out - everyone gets to move around more.
As for the "3 tireurs par équipe sera effectué (face à face avec le gardien)" it doesn't actually make sense grammatically: I suggest something like "3 players from each team shoot in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper".
