@polyglot; You probably noticed this place is for discussion.
My point (it's a question not a statement) is about the equivalent of "CCLLB" in english. Something that only tells the person is of some fame in a given public, be it a country, or the local pub. The fame being taken not necessarily in a positive sense.
My apologies if you felt offended, that was not my goal.

Not necessarily the expression only as to do with being known. The person can be known for massive failures, utter incompetence... it still will be "connu comme le loup blanc" and as a matter of fact it's quite often the case.
"Il est connu comme le loup blanc pour son ignorance des faits, personne n'écoute plus ce qu'il dit"

All I wrote is no context needed in french...it fits all situations.
"tout le monde le connait", "c'est une star".
The limitations to the popularity are given by what follows the expression
Il est connu comme le blanc (nothing else/dans ce bar /dans la presse / en France...)

It's best to avoid the passive. The "made his name..." is a good solution for the example you give. And you should probably use something as broad as possible for your glossary entry, like "is very well known".

as English is not big on passive forms like this. You would say: In the trade, everybody knows him. His name is on everybody's lips.

In the example you give, you could say that NR has made his name in the industry. Not in this case but in others, you might talk about "living legends".

Here we have the proof that "connu comme le loup blanc" DOES need context.
I initially suggested 'household name', but given the extra context the asker has supplied I've changed my mind.

"connu comme le loup blan"c doesn't need context in french. It's classic and very well known.
The meaning is : everybody knows him. Nothing more, nothing less.
In the "Dictionnaire français-anglais des expressions populaires" the translation suggested is 'he is known to everybody!" and it's exactly that.
Now is this an acceptable translation?

Well, Nick Rodwell isn't a household name. He's just well known within the industry - you could say something like "is the doyen of them all".

Well, actually there is no a specific context because I'm looking for this translation to fill a terminologic glossary about expressions with the french word "blanc". So, the context is just something or someone very known as this phrase expresses...

To give you an example, it's would be something like that :

"Dans le métier, Nick Rodwell a fini par être connu comme le loup blanc. Lui qui, à Londre, a créé en 1984 la première boutique spécialisée dans les objets de Tintin, est donc aujourd’hui craint par tous ceux qui voudraient toucher à l’image du héros de BD."
