I'm not sure if they mean "crystal clear laughter" in this case.

"Les enfants collèrent leur nez au visage de leur père. D'une caressesil les aima et d'un regard il les calma. Ils reprisent leur place tout au fond du divan et leurs **rires** eurent soudain **comme un son de cristal.**

laughter ... like the sound of crystal clinking in the air


Explanation:
In American English "tinkle" is often used by women as a euphemism for urinating. I rather prefer "clinking" than "tinkling," and--yes--I have gone a step further to expand the image of sound rising in the air.

neutral  B D Finch: Tinkling and clinking are not the same sounds. Money clinks, crystal tinkles (a higher pitched sound). Let's help those coy US women keep their euphemism by retaining the word "tinkle" for its original meaning.//Full glasses clink, empty ones tinkle.
