French term or phrase: sous le magistère des mollahs
Son protégé, c’était Abbas Kiarostami dont tout le monde connaît la filiation rossellinienne: un humaniste sous le magistère des mollahs.

Does this mean (under the thumb/at the mercy/controlled)

or does it mean with wisdom/power of a mullah.

or taught by a mullah?

The film director is a humanist/communist so I am inclined to think the first suggestion but the dictionary just describes this as a type of doctorate?

agree  SMcG (X): Yeah, with the modern use of 'magistère'. Also the reference to Roberto Rossellini (who worked under similar conditions with Mussolini and is a kind of spiritual father to Kiarostami ) implies this. btw GREAT filmmaker. PS not "swayed" but subject to.

Reference information:
In the "type of doctorate" sense you refer to, magistère is a recent coinage.

Larousse Lexis gives:

MAGISTÈRE ... 2. Autorité doctrinale, morale ou intellectuelle : Exercer un magistère. Le magistère de l'Église

agree  SMcG (X): Yes but not "swayed", he was "subject" to their teachings and it implies he lived under a doctrine that was somewhat authoritarian.
