A sculptor talking about one of his works: "Les heures blanches projettent des ombres noires"

English translation:fruitless hours
Explanation:
''blanc'' can sometimes mean ''empty''. These were times when the sculptor had no inspiration, wasted his time.

b) [Avec un idée d'espace vide] Laisser un nom en blanc; un acte en blanc; un blanc dans la conversation (un silence); chique* en blanc; promotion* en blanc.

I also found this, which would be pertinent if the sculptor needed drink in order to be inspired:

Et instaure une heure blanche - de 5 h 30 à 7 h - durant laquelle les boîtes ne peuvent plus servir d'alcool.

Asker: So many good ideas now - it's getting harder to choose.

agree  Chris Hall: I read it as meaning "Fruitless / Unproductive hours lead to inactivity" as a standalone sentence as it currently is without any further context.

agree  mimi 254: unproductive hours may be ok as Chris says!

sleepless nights

Explanation:
Sleepless nights casting dark shadows...

Without further context I'd just go with the obvious. See wiki reference below for further usage of "white nights" meaning all-night concert event etc

the dead of night

Explanation:
yes, I realise this is not a direct translation, nor does it contain any colours, but it's a transferred metaphor related to lying awake in the wee small hours (another posiblilty?), with perhaps similar - perhaps depressing? - connotations to "heures blanches"

dark shadows/dead of night

Unfortunately, metaphors rarely have a really good equivalent in translation, and "compensation" has to be sought by some other means

agree  Hazel Le Goff: I like 'wee small hours' but I think dead of night is a better register and is more concise.
