it's when you photocopy an entire book (for use) instead of buying it. a practice frowned upon but quite common.

  -> Thank you! I don't know that ProZ.commers should be inventing neologisms! The term "pirate" or "make a pirate copy" already connotes illegal activity that violates copyright laws.

Shame there's no equivalent wordplay in English, so I think you have to repress the smile and get on with it ...

"Illegal photocopying" because photocopying within reason is legal.
