French term or phrase: Le luxe devrait être l’essentiel dans l’excès
I am struggling to think of a catchy, natural English translation for this quote. It is cited within some marketing material I'm translating that describes different LUXURY PERFUMES. It was said by one of the luxury perfumers.

Thanks for any ideas you can give!

I also liked your choice of "essence" in this context. However, I chose the word "indulgence" as it has a more positive and connotation for this type of marketing material than "excess".
Thanks!

Luxury is the prime feature of excess

Explanation:
Just a suggestion. It is essential, it is the prime feature/characteristic.

Keep in mind "l'essentiel" actually doesn't mean it is essential, but merely means excess is mostly "made out" of luxury if you will.

"prime element" also works.

agree  Yolanda Broad: I especially like "at the heart of excess" but wonder whether the first 1/2 couldn't be briefer.

neutral  Kévin Bernier: The same goes for the original sentence. I think it is intended, and hence should be translated accordingly.

“perfume should be the essential in the excessive”

Explanation:
This translation comes up many times: Kilian believes and stands by the mantra “perfume should be the essential in the excessive”, for example in
http://thegentlemansdaily.com/2009/11/saturday-scent-back-to...
C'est vraiment un parfum de luxe ("named after his grandfather and LVMH co-founder, Kilian Hennessy"): "Who is the Killian customer? She is a woman who knows herself, knows exactly what she wants. She might have already worn a Chanel, Dior scent but now she wants to be more unique, something special."

Luxury is missing (he wants to convey both messages: excess and luxury), and I think Barbara's proposal has everything the message needs.
