French term or phrase: lieu de vie (et de ville)
Taking about a new food stand at the Polytechnique in Paris: un veritable lieu de vie au coeur du campus.

It seems rather ridiculous to me to call a food court stand a "true living space", and I really don't know how to render this appropriately in English.

They use the same term again when talking about train stations, how they are going to add new food and shop services and make them into "nouveaux lieux de vie et de ville"

Some French campuses *are* pretty dead, so I guess even a food court could become a bustling center for student life...

I think Mara should just combine all of the answers proposed.

Maybe "lively urban venues and social areas adding vitality to the student living and eating scene in the heart of the campus"

Just kidding, of course :)
