French term or phrase: sur support
"Traiteé d'écriture sur support"

This applies specifically to acousmatic music.

"écriture" in this case is midway between "composition" and "theory". The author specifically notes that it is NOT composition, but rather a more technical preliminary skill set, similar to studying harmony, counterpoint, etc.

"sur support" refers to making music, in most cases, directly onto recording tape ("tape music") or to a digital recording device.

I won't complain if someone prefers to translate "écriture sur support" as a whole.

I find some occurrences of "on support" in google, etc, but these sound translated (and often are written by non-native speakers) and tend to be ambiguous.

agree  philgoddard: This is the meaning, though "treatise on writing on media" doesn't work as a book title. Depending on the context, it should either be left in French or heavily adapted. Maybe "Writing on storage media: a treatise".
