bunkers Explanation: Many artillery installations, especially for coastal artillery, have historically been protected by extensive bunker systems. These usually housed the crews serving the weapons, protected the ammunition against counter-battery fire, and in numerous examples also protected the guns themselves, though this was usually a trade-off reducing their fields of fire. Artillery bunkers are some of the largest individual pre-Cold War bunkers. The walls of the 'Batterie Todt' gun installation in northern France were up to 3.5 metres (11 ft) thick,[11] and an underground bunker was constructed for the V-3 cannon. Example sentence(s):

Reference: rings Reference information: “Rings” doesn’t really capture the “containing” aspect of “encuvements”, but I wonder if that’s what the structures are called in English. See photo and caption here “155 mm G.P.F. gun ca. 1929. Note concrete pad and ring” https://coronadohistory.org/static/media/uploads/historical ... “The Canon de 155mm GPF, designated 155 mm gun M1917 (French-made) or M1918 (US-made) in U.S. service, was often married with Panama mounts...” “A concrete column with a diameter of ten feet (3.0 m) was constructed in the center of the circle to support the gun and carriage. The concrete column was connected to the outer concrete ring by concrete beams for alignment/stability.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_mount |
