cushion coat Explanation: Research findings only, so fairly low confidence level. From Principles of Welding: Processes, Physics, Chemistry, and Metallurgy By Robert W. Messler, Jr. Another place where dilution must be taken into account is in weld overlaying, also known as cladding, surfacing, or hardfacing, to provide protection against corrosion or wear. Too much dilution by the base metal can severely degrade the desired properties of the overlay. Multiple layers of overlay (to get past the dilution), or an intermediate, buttering or “cushion coat” (to block dilution) will help.5 5 Cushion coats are also employed in hardfacing to provide some give or strain accommodation under hard, wear-resistant coatings that must also tolerate impact. A good example is the use of a softer, impact-resistant cushion coat under a wear-resistant coating on swing hammers used for crushing rock. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Sla2E145pbQC&pg=PA362&lp... From: Practical Welding Technology By Rudy Mohler In this instance, it is accomplished easiest by what is commonly called "buttering", which consists of initially preheating and covering all weld joint surfaces with a layer of beads, as shown in Fig. 6-15. The buttering filler metal should be a ductile type, such as nickel-iron or the low-hydrogen E7018 type. The softer layer acts somewhat as a cushion: an expansion and contraction area. The best deposition sequence is to deposit a bead on one bevel and then one on the other alternating the direction of travel. Also, two buttering layers are best. https://books.google.be/books?id=tsFoJjMU4dgC&pg=PA88&lpg=PA... |

Reference: buttering and coating Reference information: http://www.blueshield.ca/en/docs/pdf/techInfo/DataBook/A-178... buttering. A form of surfacing in which one or more layers of weld metal are deposited on the groove face of one member (for example, a high alloy weld deposit on steel base metal which is to be welded to a dissimilar base metal). The buttering provides a suitable transition weld deposit for subsequent completion of the butt weld. coating. A relatively thin layer (> 1 mm (0.04 in.)) of material applied by surfacing for the purpose of corrosion prevention, resistance to high temperature scaling, wear resistance, lubrication, or other purposes. See cladding, surfacing, and hardfacing "Cotaing" may be more accurate than "layer" in context? |
