Found a couple of examples on the 'net where this expression is used in a similar context to the one I'm working on:

I'm presuming that 2/100 means a 0.02 mm (or 0.02 inch???) gap between the pistons and the bore in the first example, and between the cylinders and the bushing in the second example.

If so, what would be the correct term for "serrage" here? Allowance?

Maybe your choice is good. The interference between the two diameters has to be much smaller, even a clearance. Surely, this connection is not a classic press-fitted one. Also, is not a press-fitted conection the connection between gudgeon pin and piston.

The sentence to be translated is as given in the second example. The context is a bearing for a roll in a hot-dip galvanizing system. To extend the service life of the bearing, rods are inserted on the inside of the bushing and rotated when worn. At working temperature, these rods expand to keep them in place but can be rotated at ambient temperature when required.

Your first example appears to be about boring out the *piston* to receive the gudgeon/wrist pin (axe). That could indeed involve an interference fit (ajustement avec serrage) rather than a clearance fit (ajustement avec jeu).

What exactly is the sentence you're translating?

'Serrage', as a numerical specification, can mean 'jeu négatif'.

The term I've heard for a word with two opposite meanings is contranym ( http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/contranym ) although Wiki seems to prefer auto-antonym ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-antonym ).

Could that be because, although "serrage" is translated as "tightening", it is not quite an equivalent concept? e.g. I was thinking of a force applied to the piston that affects its position, whether that is to bring it closer or further away.

I feel sure there is an English word for use of a word to mean the opposite (eg inflammable), but this seems to be the case here: "serrage" meaning "tightening" actually means making loose, or clearance! Bizarre.

Just found http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-963728.... which would appear to back that up: "My Haynes manual says the cylinder bore to piston clearance should be 0.015-0.045mm, with a service limit of 0.1mm. It lists the cylinder bore to piston clearance for the XR80 as 0.01-0.045mm with a service limit of 0.2mm, so there is a slight difference in the clearance for different displacements."

Explanation:
Press fits are extensively applied to make permanent joints seldom dismantled. The relative displacement of press-fitted parts is prevented by forces due to elastic compressive deformation (in the male part) and tensile deformation (in the female part), which are proportional to the amount of interference in the joint. The male outer diameter is bigger than female inner diameter. Assembly is done whether by heating female part or by cooling the male part. (2/100 means the difference between the two diameters in mm. In France is not usually British metering system.)
