In the translation of a piece on a flexible sheath that is used for protecting mechanical, industrial parts -one of the descriptions in bullet points relates how it can be used for special packaging when transporting materials. This comes under the section on its leak-proof capabilities for piping, ducts etc and then the last line after that is the one with "vanille" when discussing its uses in transporting materials.

Are we really talking about "vanilla" or does it simply mean "standard" , or is it trying to juxtapose "vanilla pods" with the complexity of wooden or concrete posts? Or is it some other term which I have failed to find.

This would refer to vanilla pods which are long and thin (and very expensive so they mustn't be crushed).

By the way, did you know that etymologically the word "vanilla" means "sheath"?!

Asker: Hi Catharine, yes, I agree, I thought this originally, but then thought maybe a bit crazy. I think they are trying to juxtapose delicate and tough. So you're right!

agree  CJ.Ecoffet: I guess Catherine is perfectly suited to answer this query, being located in a wonderful vanilla producing area. Although it is a rather odd juxtaposition, it does make sense to list vanilla as it does require air-tight containers to preserve its flavour
