I think it is worth establishing precisely what "en reste" means:

"Au fig. Ne pas être (demeurer) en reste (avec qqn). Ne pas être redevable (envers quelqu'un), être avec lui sur un pied d'égalité; avoir toujours quelque chose à répondre, ne pas être pris au dépourvu."
