Asker: Oh yes Tony, I thought so and had to like add Finance Department but this proposal is quite the best. given it is mentioned in the heading of the paper, I will use a new line in place of the colon. It should be celar this way. Thank you

agree  Tony M: Yes, makes all the difference! And I do think the translator could be permitted to add a colon in order to avoid potential ambiguity, thus: "Federal Public Service: Finances" (for readers who might not be aware that other FPS also exist)

neutral  philgoddard: Well, I beg to differ. Just because they mistranslate it on their website and in some documents doesn't mean you're "condemned to stick to it" :-) English is not one of Belgium's official languages, so it doesn't have an official English name.

  -> well in this case one is. If I see a one-off attempt and it's dreadful, then I don't (and leave note) but this is everywhere including EU etc. So don't agree with you at all/same with EU. we are stuck with their English, rotten as it may be.

  -> it'san administration to be exact. the name is what it is in this case. Like much of the EU English and "official" English used on NL sites for example.. We just have to live with it.

neutral  Tony M: Sorry, but expressing it only in part like this risks misinterpretation, as if it were 'financement des services publics' (which it is, but only indirectly!) / You either include the 'official' Federal, or need to change the translation.
