French term or phrase: secret de la défense nationale
This is from a document about a Decree relating to nuclear facilities written in FR-FR. I have done some research on the term but I am struggling to find a succinct way of expressing it in English.

Here is the surrounding text: "Vu l’arrêté du 23 juillet 2010 portant approbation de l’instruction générale interministérielle sur la protection du secret de la défense nationale"

The best I have come up with so far is "confidential information linked to national defence secrets". It's a bit of a mouthful... :p

Any help appreciated!

Re asker's note: well, it's what the refs call it, but you could use "secrets". Try some googling yourself!

Notes to answerer
Asker: Protection of national defence secrecy? I feel like that doesn't quite scan although that could be tiredness... Can "secrecy" as opposed to "secrets" be protected?

Asker: Sorry! Have been googling like mad all evening - just thought a human ear might be good. Thanks for your help :D

sensitive National Defence assets

Explanation:
The protection of sensitive Government, or more narrowly National Defence, assets was previously (and sometimes still is) referred to in the UK as "security classification of assets". The linked PDF shows levels of protection and the related degrees of sensitivity.
I think "secrecy" is not entirely wrong but doesn't use the terms used by Government.

A freer and less literal translation. Isn't the "instruction générale interministérielle" about protecting sensitive defence assets (documents, technology, equipment, etc) from disclosure, not about protecting "secrecy" per se?

neutral  B D Finch: No question that the phrase you suggest exists. However, it simply isn't a translation of the French source term.
1 hr

neutral  AllegroTrans: You have overtranslated this - neither "sensitive" or "assets" appear in the source text or in the title of the legislation being referred to

agree  Yolanda Broad: Governments adore using euphemisms to name their activities!

Nb. "défense" incorrectly spelled "défence" in previous query, which would explain why it might have turned up in a search. I just put in "secret de la".

Asker: Thanks Melissa. I did a search on "secret" too and it didn't come up for some reason so thanks for the link :)
