Good afternoon,

Is anyone familiar with this expression " teneurs fort anormales en U " ?

La phease est " Ces endroits, souvent tourmalinisées et riches en oxydes de fer, montrent par endroit des teneurs fort anormales en U et des teneurs un peu élevées en Au.

Il s'agit d'une étude scientifique de la terre.

very abnormal levels of uranium
Explanation:
although the phrase "abnormally high uranium contents" is slightly more elegant than my solution, and perfectly serviceable, from a linguistic point of view "teneurs fort anormales en U" does not actually say these are high rates. The context seems to imply it, but it is not necessarily the case. It could theoretically be abnormally low rates. So I have added this answer as well.

abnormally high uranium contents

Explanation:
I should have thought: teneur en U = uranium content

Indeed I realised that the fort was being used adverbially here, but surely for it to be mentioned at all, the uranium content must be higher than you'd expect: otherwise it wouldn't merit a mention? However, I concede that without any real context to go on, this is all just guesswork - hence my middling confidence level!

neutral  Tony M: So obvious, it occurred to all of us... but then, as ATG quite rightly points out, there is indeed a syntactic nicety that could be important.
