mining scrub Explanation: I would suggest translating the term unless you really want to give the text a French flavour. You can also find reference to mining wastelands, so mining scrubland is also possible. |

maquis minier / mining maquis Explanation: I would consider either not translating the term at all or, at most, going for something like "mining maquis". I wouldn't translate "maquis", as it appears very often in references describing the natural environment of New Caledonia. Here are two examples in English that use "maquis minier": The New Caledonia Grassbird typically inhabits scrubby areas in the lowlands and hills of New Caledonia, particularly **maquis minier** with ferns, but also secondary forest and grasslands, and has even been seen in dense rainforest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Caledonian_Thicketbird The most distinctive New Caledonian habitat is 'maquis,' also called **'maquis miniers'**, a shrub-dominated habitat underlain by ultramafic substrates (the name means 'mined maquis', because its rock is mined for nickel). [Note: the above ref. provides a translation of "mined maquis", but I would go for "mining maquis" if you translate "minier".] http://www.conifers.org/topics/nctrees.php Here is a ref. that uses "mining maquis": Dracophyllum ramosum in **mining maquis** New Caledonia http://www.diomedia.com/public/;jsessionid=9275D12755CFAAA25... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2013-07-18 05:39:28 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "maquis" can be found in several English dictionaries, though mostly in ref. to the Mediterranean: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/maquis http://oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english... |
