French term or phrase: bans calcaires
In a list describing the different geological stata transected by a borehole:

"passages de bans calcaires et grès calcaires dans des niveaux de sables"

Does anyone know what "bans" means in this context...calcareous something?

Many thanks!

agree  joehlindsay: Yeah, i think its 'bancs', but there is some possibility that they left more off than just "c", and it might be 'bande'
