I don't think you need the two verbs in English necessarily. You could select one term that encompasses both. Otherwise it sounds a little heavy handed in English. But if I were to use two verbs, I would do something like the following:

in context: "given the delicacy that should characterize and guide our relationship..."

I like "should" here because it sounds like he is scolding the other attorney.

I agree with AllegroTrans that more context is not necessary.
