comment est-ce qu'on pourrait traduire cette expression en anglais?

Je vous donne le contexte:

Avant ici ça grouillait de partout, ça guelait, il y avait de la vie quoi, là il n’y a que les tourists qui passent silencieux.

Le personnage dit ça en passant dans la ville, "ça gueulait" veut dire que avant il y avait beaucoup plus de bruit.

Peut-etre quelque chose comme "it was a shouting place"?

I quite like the impersonal or passive constructions here; depends how you ahndle the whole thing, I could see something like "it was seething / teeming, there was shouting / raised voices, ..." etc.

neutral  Daryo: wouldn't "voices were raised" be used when there is some confrontation brewing? All the ST says is "people are talking very loud" - just perfectly normal way of talking in many places around the Mediterranean Sea.

  -> I don't think so; to me, it doesn't imply 'confrontation' any more than 'gueuler' does in FR: they might be raised in anger, excitement, whatever...
