French term or phrase: volige
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this term.

It appears in the description of a product.

The full sentence is "ENSEMBLE MATELAS ET SOMMIER VOLIGE"

The only translation I have found is "batten" but I have never heard of a "batten bed base".

Is "volige" just another word for "slat"?

I found an example here:
http://www.cdiscount.com/maison/achat-meuble-literie/ensembl...

This is to be translated into UK English.

Many thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Kerryann

Thank you for your help. I added "rigid" to make it different from normal slats.

rigid platform bed base

Explanation:
This rather looks like these models:

"slat" is for the French "lattes", ie flexible slats mounted on plastic

here we are talking of rigid planks

not really a "sommier à lattes", this is made of planks 85mm wide and 12mm thick, much more rigid than usual, so the "volige" model is made of "voliges", probably to avoid using the term "lattes" that could be confusing and "planches" that could be understood as disparaging.
This is an odd and abusive use of a technical term from an other field, I will let natives discuss whether it could be acceptable to use such an abusive wording in English.
