French term or phrase: température mini... à l'extérieur pour un rendement maxi... à l'intérieur
Hi,

I'm translating some pages from a French retail website into British English. The problematic phrase appears in relation to an industrial fan heater. Below is the phrase in context:

"Radiateur soufflant 2000W. Ce chauffage de chantier est un chauffage d'appoint qui peut convenir pour des surfaces de 80 m2 maximum.
Ce chauffage permet de chauffer environ un volume de (à titre indicatif peut varier suivant les conditions): (avec une température mini -10° à l’'extérieur pour un rendement maxi 12 ° à l’'intérieur)
- Très bien isolé : 100 m3
- Isolé seulement en toiture : 60 m3
- Mal isolé : 30 m3"

Here is the product in question: http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B00JE50Y4E

I'm not particularly familiar with these products and the language and structure in the ST sentence isn't that clear. By "à l'’extérieur" and " à l'’intérieur", does it mean simply "outdoors" and "indoors" or does it mean something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Explanation:
Yes, that's usually what it would mean! Note that literally, of course, the temperatures would refer to those outside / inside the space being considered for heating — but in your context, and with the temperatures given, it is fairly clear that they do indeed mean 'out/indoors'

Careful how you translate 'rendement' here, as I don't think the usual translation of 'efficiency' will really work well in this particular instance.

By the way, I don't really see anything particularly "unclear" in the source text — unless I'm missing something, in which case, please do explain?

The implication of the temperature ranges given is that this fantastic heater is capable of maintaining a temperature differential of 22°C between inside and outside, provided that the outside temperatuire is not below –10°C and/or that the indoor temperature is not above +22°C.
Although it does make it clear that the heating capcity within this range depends on the volume of the space, it also conveniently fails to mention how QUICKLY this space would be brought up to this temperature: this poor little 2 kW heater would take quite some time to get a volume of 100 m³ up to that sort of temperature!

agree  Daryo: the "unclear" part is the relationship/interaction between various max/min values // with some unusually efficient thermal insulation even a biggish volume would be very hot very quickly, but decent thermal insulation is a rarity..

-> Merci, Daryo ! Ah OK, as an engineer, I didn't see that as unclear ;-)

neutral  B D Finch: Not sure how you get from 12°C to 22°C. What about occupant body heat and solar gain from glazed areas? (Solar gain took my living room up to 24°C yesterday morning, while the heating had only been set to give 20°C.)

-> Thanks, B! –10 + 12 = Tdifferential of 22. Clearly, they are only interested in the heating capacity of their product; collateral effects could only improve the figures ;-)

disagree  GILLES MEUNIER: cela ne traduit pas la relation entre la valeur max et min
