Fine, but what does "mesh" mean?

Explanation:
I mean, it's all very well for a translated website to say that maille is "mesh", but I'm afraid I don't see the connection with wood finishes.

OTOH, Dicobat defines:
MAILLE n 1. BOIS: une bille est dite sciée 'sur maille' si elle est débitée en quartiers ou faux quartiers, c'est à dire selon des axes passant par le centre.
GB: (silver) grain.
Le sciage sur maille, plus difficile que sur dosse, est réservé à des bois de qualité dont on attend un effet décoratif par la mise en évidence des veines parallèles, ou 'maillure'.
