not sure what to call this function - is a forest manager working for the Office National des Forêts but maybe should stay closer to the French - not sure

Depends on how the term actually occurs in your text as to whether you'd want to retain the French term with just an explanation in English... would need more context...

Forest managers are specialists in the science and practice of caring for woodlands, both for the commercial production of timber and for conservation and recreation purposes. They are responsible for managing the forest and the people who work in and visit it. The work involves an annual programme of work to plant, manage and harvest trees, as well as arranging and negotiating the sale of the timber. Managers also plan and supervise general maintenance work. Strict health and safety regulations must be followed. Where the forest is used as a centre for recreation, managers might be involved with laying out nature trails and protecting the forest's wildlife. They must maintain good relations with neighbouring landowners and the public, and liaise with timber merchants and local authorities.

heritage officer/manager

Explanation:
These terms are quite commonly used for this sort of position. One of the links below even refers specifically to the ONF.

If you want to specify that this is forestry-related, you could add 'forest' so either 'forest heritage manager' or 'forest heritage officer'.
I actually like 'manager' better than 'officer', even though the ONF-related link here uses 'officer'.

And additional link for 'heritage manager': http://www.forestry.gov.uk/newsrele.nsf/WebNewsReleases/312B...

Another option if you want to make the type of heritage obvious (like by adding 'forest' in front) is 'natural heritage manager'. Natural heritage is popular term for forestry and related work (http://www.snh.org.uk/pdfs/publications/commissioned_reports...

neutral  Vicky James: Heritage is a red herring here. Your ONF related link is actually a (fairly poor) translation, and the "heritage manager" in the other link refers to a guy responsible for 50 "highly sensitive archaeological sites"... not directly forest related.

-> Well of course it's a translation, but this doesn't mean the term doesn't fit. And if you read the 'other' link you'll see we are definitely talking forests here. In any case, adding 'forest' or 'natural' would solve all these issues, as I suggested.

neutral  Chris Hall: "Heritage" is completely redundant here. Let's keep things simple and not over-complicate job titles. Best option is to go for "forest manager" as Vicky suggests.
