French term or phrase: grille de transistor
One for Tony M I think! (if you are there). Amazed this is not in the archives. GDT doesn't provide clarity either.

"un transistor ayant une première extrémité pour recevoir une tension d'entrée, une seconde extrémité pour générer une tension redressée, et une extrémité de commande pour recevoir une tension de grille; et un circuit de commande de grille, couplé au transistor, pour générer la tension de grille en fonction d'une différence de tension entre X et Y, dans lequel le circuit de commande de grille détecte un moment initial quand la différence de tension est inférieure à une première tension seuil prédéfinie, fournit la tension de grille pour activer le transistor ... "

I had assumed "gate"... but in fact "grid of a transistor" appears a lot too. In this patent, for example, the two seem to be interchangeable: https://patents.google.com/patent/EP1463102A2/en (title vs contents...).

OTOH maybe there is a difference between "grid" and "gate"...

transistor gate
Explanation:
The patent you quote as ref. is in fact a translation from DE, which is more consistent in its terminology. FETs use a 'gate' as an analogy for the 'grid' of a vacuum tube / valve, but FR rather confusingly uses the same term for both, perhaps to avoid the alternative ambiguity with a 'logic gate'

Just to clarify: the terminology 'gate' (FR: 'grille') applies only to Field-Effect (and related types) of transistor, commonly referred to as FET.

disagree  Tony M: Not in this case: here, we are specifically talking about FETs

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, much appreciated. "grid of transistor" gets a lot fewer hits than "gate of transistor", but nothing beats confirmation from l'homme du métier...

agree  Daryo: yes, that would explain it. I was curious why would anyone nowadays talk of "the 'grid/grille' of a vacuum tube" in reference to a transistor!.
1 hr
-> Thanks, Daryo! Just because when FETs came in, they were regarded as analagous to the way valves work.

agree  chris collister: Yep!
