French term or phrase: protections amont
Appears as below for technical specif of an underground / railway, many thanks. I've seen upstream protections in a few documents but I don't think this is correct here.

In case of short circuit, the current in the rails is very intense and generates very large electrodynamic forces.

The following curve shows the maximum short-circuit to be considered for the design in this case:

Courant de court-circuit (kA)
Interruption du court-circuit par les protections amont
Temps (ms)

protective device
Explanation:
This should already be in the KudoZ glossary somwhere.

When 'protection' is used in FR as a countable noun for a physical object, we usually need to give it conrete form in EN by adding another word to it, and this is one of the most widely accepted solutions in the discipline.

'amont' is a separate term which I'm sure isn't giving you any problems.

I have deliberately not sought to translate 'amont' (as my edited ehadword term is intended to indicate), as Asker must be aware that is really an entriely separate term that ought to form a separate question; in any case, there are already several examples in the glossary.

early protective devices

Explanation:
A lot of phrases use 'early' to mean amont in French

Early trigger of ESD protection device
Early break contacts
Early-Warning System in Lightning Protection Device
Early Oil Circuit Breaker

I think you need sth to get the idea of amont over

disagree  Tony M: 'early' translates a specific other concept, usually with the notion of 'avance', as in your early-break contacts; as such, it would be highly misleading to use it in this context, which is talking about spatial position rather than temporal.

-> But such safety devices ARE spatially before. Do you think early warning radar systems are far behind the front lines??? Or fuse boxes are placed after the devices they protect??? Safety devices don't invert time but are SPATIALLY "en amont".

disagree  SafeTex: Completely misses the point of 'amont'. No idea of "real-time" safety devices like car speed limiters as opposed to "early" devices that are spatially "en amont" of the protected device.

-> Didn't you notice I had deliberately edited the headword term, so as not to clutter up the glossary? 'early' cannot be used here because of a serious ambiguity with other technical uses referring to a TEMPORAL advance.
