French term or phrase: Câbleur technicien
I am translating a price schedule for a construction contract, and I have just translated 'Câbleur exécutant' as 'cable layer' but then the next term in the list is 'Câbleur technicien', for which I require a separate title. Any suggestions? They are installing cables for monitors and audiovisual equipment. I need an answer today as the translation has to be submitted by 9am tomorrow. (GMT)

and 'wireman' for you other role. It seems to me that the 'câbleur executant' is the labour that does the donkey work, and the 'technicien' is the brains who takes responsibility for its proper execution.

I wouldn't user 'layer', as that tends to have another, quite different meaning (e.g. the ship that lays undersea cables) — generally speaking, we don't 'lay' cables in normal installations.

Note that in En we do often say 'engineer' where FR uses 'technicien' — I think this could arguably be just such a case. We might say, for example, "the TV engineer came to fix out telly" whereas in FR that would be a 'technicien'.

Asker: As ever Tony, thank you for a very comprehensive explanation! As i said in a previous note, I went for 'cable fitter' and 'wiring technician'.
