I agree with Cchat's explanation of the meaning of a stage en responsabilité which is most commonly translated as an "internship" in American English. I'd like to also offer the possibility of using the American equivalent which is a Teachin Assistant or a TA

From the responsabilities and the outcome it seems to me that the stage en responsabilité is the french equivalent of a UTA or a GTA.

Two terms are generally used in France: stage d'observation and stage en responsabilité. (Basically, 'watching' and 'doing') This document provides an explanation of the terms in an African context.

Les stages en responsabilité ou stage rural

Durant ces stages, l'élève-maître est responsable de la préparation et de l'exécution de l'ensemble des activités d'enseignement-apprentissage dans tous les sous-cycles, sous la supervision du directeur d'école et de l'enseignant titulaire de la classe. Il s'initie aussi à l'enseignement dans les différents types de classe : multigrades, cours uniques, double flux, etc.

Le stage en responsabilité dure six (6) semaines pour le cycle instituteur et dix (10) semaines pour les instituteurs-adjoints et s'effectue généralement en zone rurale. Ce stage fait l'objet d'évaluation et la note obtenue est prise en compte lors de l'examen de fin de formation.

If the local context is Nigeria, the notion of "stage rural" may have a completely different meaning. All my comments refer to the situation in France.

In France, the "stage en responsabilité" is an important part of teacher training. It means the trainee teacher has one or more classes, like a fully-trained colleague, for the whole school year - including meetings, exams... everything. Reality in all its glory. The rest of the time, he or she is supposed to be mentored by a senior teacher and attend theoretical and subject sessions, and usually takes the last qualifying exams (CAPES Pratique, for example) near the end of the school year.

"Ainsi le stage en responsabilité ou le stage rural s’inscrivent dans cette logique.

as these are 2 different courses with different goals.

In rural areas, the classroom situation is different, as all levels are in the same room, so the teacher's work is very demanding.
Generally, a "stage rural" will be at elementary level, not secondary education.

- "vivre les réalités du terrain"
- "développer leur esprit de coopération et de savoir-vivre"
J'avoue avoir du mal à comprendre quel est le but de ce stage...

This actually means that the trainee teacher is in charge of a class, for a set period of time.
