French term or phrase: application croisée
I am translating the guidelines for testing the lead in cosmetic pencils and am not sure how to translate "application croisée" in the sentence below:

Par comparaison sur ces deux paramètres lors d’une *application croisée* sur la peau de la mine en test et de celle de l’échantillon standard.

The two parameters mentioned are colour and application. I started off by translating it as "by cross-applying the test lead and standard sample to the skin" but it sounds a bit meaningless to me. Does it just mean applying them side by side in order to compare them? During my research I also found "double coat" as a translation for "application croisée", but as this refers to paint in car manufacturing, it is probably a red herring!

Any enlightenment would be appreciated!

I think it refers to a simultaneous application, as you said 'side by side' for the purpose of comparison.

neutral  Tony M: Certainly "for the purpose of comparison" — but I'm not at all convinced that 'joint' is a good way of expressing that.

  -> Again Tony, I think you're right. I was zeroing in on the term itself but I think my suggested sentence is a more accurate reflection of the intended meaning.

Could it be cross checking? Checking, as in evaluating, the two leads by the two different criteria? They are evaluated on their performance in both criteria, to be given as overall score for final comparison.
