I've stumbled across a technical section in an otherwise straightforward text. Can anyone please explain and provide a translation for "se positionnent en dérivation" in the above context.

LOGICIEL analyse les flux réseau [(obtenus) à partir de sonde NOM DU PRODUIT] qui se positionnent en dérivation

qui = les flux réseau

SOFTWARE analyses the network streams [collected by / tapped by ....] that are derived from / copied from the controlled/monitored stream.

IOW "SOFTWARE" is not interfering with the networks stream, only analysing "diverted copies" of these network streams.

"TAP" and "Port Mirror" are two methods used to collect/generate copies of the main streams that will be diverted /sent sideways for archiving and analysing.

Not sufficient of an expert in this field to know what is the best verb to use here for 'se positionne', but here are two possibles, along, for that matter, with 'position'.

'une dérivation' is very often a 'tap' in all sorts of fields, so as Dr Mair has confirmed that term is used in this field, I see no reason to depart from it.

neutral  Mair A-W (PhD): my concern with tap was that a tap is clearly distinct from a mirror port, yet asker's discussion post suggests his "en dérivation" is not... / it does.So you get approx translation (for dbox phrase) of: "deployed as a TAP based on TAP or on mirror port.

disagree  Daryo: "bypass" implies the stream of data keeps flowing to destination around / avoiding a non-functioning part of a network - that's not what this ST is about: creating a copy of the stream that goes one-way to a software storing it and analysing it.
