Can I thank you all for your enlightening contributions. This isn't my specialist area. Within the context of the whole text it seems apparent that the reference relates to information systems in general and therefore I doubt that this extract relates solely to voice communications. It was very helpful to know that 'interconnection server' does not in itself designate a specific type of server. I have raised the problem with the agency. Many thanks, Sue

A bus is still not a server even if it's an advanced bus, and certainly not one that requires installation of an antivirus. Just finding an article talking about [inter]connection is not enough to conclude it means the same as here. They are simply describing connections in that article.

In the article I posted above, the following paragraph is enlightening:

"The effect of all this is that systems are moving away from traditional buses and moving to interconnects that are unidirectional and point-to-point. This means the system of the future is going to look more and more like a network, with familiar network components such as switches embedded inside the computer."

The "bus" has become a complicated chip used to transfer data between other VLSI chips. A more technical article on what it calls "interconnection networks" can be found at http://bit.ly/1Sbnvm9.

I agree with Tony that Allanm's solution just isn't possible. A bus is just a small electronic part of a computing or networking device for moving data, not a complete server. It would be much the same as saying that a steering wheel is the same as a car. The term could still be an internal nickname for certain servers even if it isn't commonly known. Without knowing what the end client is actually doing with these servers, I don't quite see how we can get any closer.

Note that "serveur d'interconnection" amasses a grand total of 18 Google hits, most of which are patents and a couple of which are on this Proz query. This suggests it isn't a widely-accepted technical term in the field! The same applies for "interconnection server", with around 500 hits. IMO you'd be justified just using "interconnection server", in the absence of other information.

I really can't agree with your comment; whilst the general ideas are correct, it simply isn't possible for a 'serveur' (= some kind of computer, or server application) to be merely a bus (= in essence, an interconnecting cable system)

I believe a /serveur de interconnexion/ is commonly referred to as a bus, which is a direct connection between devices. This is not the same as the internet, but an integral part of a network. I believe the author knew what he was saying. The term in English is interconnects or simply buses. see http://bit.ly/1S9odQI

I don't see any contradiction between what Tony and I said. Connections or interconnections - what's the difference? The question is why they didn't just use the word "réseau" (network). Was it written by an administrative person who is not aware of the common terms, or was it a deliberate choice?

I don't entirely agree with Thomas!

Your text is clearly differentiating between servers used for running applications, and these other servers which are simply there to provide interconnections — between the other servers, probably, but also (possibly) between various networks, etc. All of which depends entirely, of course, on the architecture of this particular system.

The meaning of "connection" and "network" is already to connect two or more things with each other, so adding "cross" or "inter" is redundant in a logical sense, much like saying "car for driving" or "transportation truck". I can only find 15 Google hits on "cross network server" anyway. If you don't have time to ask the client before the deadline, you may want to give them the suggestion "network server" conditioned on their actual use in addition to a literal translation. Maybe they just use the term "interconnection" in-house for certain servers.

Difficult to say without knowing what they actually use them for. Maybe they are just network servers clumsily expressed as "serveur d'interconnexion", but the right term for that is "serveur réseau".
